Is there anything better than discovering a new use for something you usually throw away? This is especially true when it's actually better than what you usually do! I recently discovered that you can grow seedlings, in a little bit of dirt, inside a citrus fruit rind. This is excellent because you don't have to purchase wasteful seedling trays or transfer delicate seedlings out of a tray and into the ground; you simply plant the entire thing in your garden! As an added bonus the fruit rind provides extra nutrients for the growing plant.
I prefer to use larger fruits (such as grapefruits) because it allows the seedling to grow larger before it overwhelms the planter. One more tip, it may be helpful to slice off the bottom of the fruit (just a little sliver) in order to make the bottom flat enough to keep your baby plants from tipping over.
